A classic sloppy joe made in the slow cooker: 15 minutes prep, 4 hours low, serves 4. Sweet, tangy sauce over ground beef, ready for soft buns.

- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 medium onion
- finely diced
- 1 green bell pepper
- diced
- 2 cloves garlic
- minced
- 1 cup ketchup
- 2 tbsp tomato paste
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tbsp brown sugar
- 1 tsp chili powder
- ½ tsp smoked paprika
- ½ tsp salt
- ¼ tsp black pepper
- ½ cup water or low‑sodium beef broth
- 4 hamburger buns
Instructions
- Brown the ground beef in a skillet over medium‑high heat, breaking it up until no longer pink; drain excess fat if desired.,Add the diced onion, bell pepper, and minced garlic to the skillet; sauté until the onion is translucent and the pepper softens, about 3‑4 minutes.,Transfer the meat and vegetable mixture to the slow cooker.,Stir in ketchup, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, water (or broth), brown sugar, chili powder, smoked paprika, salt, and black pepper until evenly combined.,Cover and cook on LOW for 4 hours, or on HIGH for 2 hours 30 minutes. Do not lift the lid during the first 2 hours.,After cooking, stir the mixture. If the sauce is too thin, remove the lid and cook on HIGH for an additional 15‑20 minutes, or transfer to a saucepan and reduce on the stovetop.,Serve the hot sloppy joe mixture on toasted hamburger buns.
